So here's the story...
I never in my wildest dreams would have ever imagined that I would deliver my baby in the back of an ambulance, but that is exactly what happened.
It all started when I got home from work Thursday night. That whole night I had contractions that were about 10-15 minutes apart. I was so excited because I had a Dr. Appointment the next morning (10/01/10... my due date) and I thought with all those contractions there might be some progress and maybe the Dr. would just tell me to go into the Hospital! Well, I was wrong... he wasn't impressed at all (even though by that time they were about 7-10 minutes apart) and I was still only 2 cm dilated. He sent me home and told me, " Don't call unless your contractions are 5 minutes apart for an hour or your water breaks!" He then told me to schedule myself to be induced the following Thursday or Friday! I was so upset and still couldn't believe he sent me away... my contractions still had not subsided and were pretty much staying around 7- 10 minutes apart. After the Appointment we stopped by Greg's station and talked to his District Chief, who told Greg to take an OB kit home just in case... little did we know we would almost have to use it! We stopped by Babies R Us to pick up some last minute things and headed home. At home my contractions were still about 7 minutes apart with a few 5-6 minutes apart, but they still weren't "5 minutes consistently for an hour" and my water hadn't broke! I got to the point at home when I was getting sick and the contractions had gotten pretty painful. At that point I didn't care what the Dr. said I just wanted to go to the hospital! So we packed up the car and started on our 1 hour trek to the Hospital. As soon as we hopped in the car my contractions went from every 7 minutes to every 2-3 minutes and I was in serious pain! Greg was trying to keep me calm by telling me how close we were getting to the Hospital, but all I kept thinking is... we aren't close enough! He kept asking me if I wanted him to pull over and call 911, but I told him, "No just keep going!" He said if I felt like I needed to push he was going to call and sure enough just about a minute later I had that feeling. He called 911 told him who he was and we pulled off the freeway. As soon as we parked we heard the Sirens, it literally only took them 3 minutes to get to us! Greg told me as soon as he saw the guys who were picking us up he couldn't have asked for anyone better! So, we got into the ambulance and headed to the hospital! All I can remember saying is that I was so upset that this was happening and that I didn't want to push! It took us 15 minutes to get to the hospital, but that just wasn't fast enough... as soon as the ambulance doors opened at the hospital I told Greg the baby was coming, so he looked and said I was fine. Then I told him again "He's coming" and the second time he looked he said the baby's head was crowning! When I looked out of the back of the ambulance all I could see was a crowd of people... I felt like I was in an episode of Grey's Anatomy! Here I am, In all my glory, screaming my head off (no pain meds!), and my husband and his friends delivering my baby in the back of an ambulance! At that point Carson's head came out, the cord was wrapped around his neck, he was Grayish / Blue, and didn't make a sound for what seemed like an eternity! I was freaking out, but the guys took care of everything! They unwrapped the cord and Carson started getting his color back. Then once I heard that first little cry I was much better! After Greg cut the cord we were whisked up to the labor and delivery floor and the rest is history! Both Carson and Mommy are GREAT and now we have quite the story to tell Carson when he gets older!
It was really a blessing the way it all turned out! I just can't thank my hubby and the guys he works with enough, they were amazing! Everything went as smoothly as possible considering the circumstances.
The night before I delivered... on my way to work!
